Bought a 78s *ROLL* and scored!...

Post by CascadeChris » Thu Mar 14, 2019 2:43 am

Not a huge score, no BU LN's (drats!) But check it out guys, paid $800 or $40/per.. My excitement was in overdrive.

I had bought a raw 63/4 78-CC v9 with PL rev & a raw semi-PL (reverse might make it) 21-S (yup, 21-s!) that I'll post later. Then the guy asks me if I like "fresh" rolls. Of course I say yes and he pulls out a 21-D roll with some very flashy but mostly choice coins and like 80% were the same die pair with same cracks/breaks etc. He wanted like $1200 which I thought was a tad steep.

Then I saw the 78s roll and asked to look at it. He said its $800 but the coins "weren't as good as the 21-d roll" (bwahaha) so I casually looked it over and saw 2x v19A's and one had a PL obv. So as to not show my hand I casually put them back and said, yeah not as good as the 21d roll but I like 78s better so maybe I'll get this one." Then I seal the deal, pay, casually get up and went to my car and that's when I started shaking and nearly pee'd myself. It was AWESOME!.. Not a "mega" score per say but I still haven't fully come off the endorphin rush yet

Needless to say I will be visiting this dealer again whenever I see him.. And aside from having decent material he was a darn nice guy. Lunch is on me next time 😊

Oh, and when I got home the two v19A's mysteriously become 3! Funny how that happens when the adrenaline is pumping. Anyway, enough talk, here're the results!...

Does any of the v14 have gouge in the reverse denticle above ED?

Great buy Chris!
Thanks. These kinds of buys are complete thrills, to me at least.

Here's some quick pics of the 19A obverses. I basically saw two 19A's, packed up the roll, set it aside knowing I was going to buy it and browsed a bit more trying to contain my excitement.

Actually, the best "19A" looks like a late stage with heavy polsihign but the N clash appears to still be present so 19B she is, I think!.. Is this stage known to you 78s guys?...

And the reverse appears to be moderately concave!...

thanks for the pics of those vam-14 Chris.
I was wondering about the comment that "only some" has gouge.
The 3rd coin kinda look different, or maybe just the lighting?

That one seems to have the gouge but not as prominent/thick/large as the other two. I wonder if it's a progressive gouge?

Chris, I don't know much about the 19b's I have yet to find 1. Here is a link to my 19a that I cherried a few months ago slabbed but unattributed by seller or holder. https://www.ebay.com/itm/143076954191

Could be.
Does the 3rd coin has left wing pitted? How is the pitting compare with the 1st and 2nd coin?

Actually, with fresh eyes, perhaps the gouge hasn't started yet or is only very minor I cant quite tell.

First set of pics is the 3rd coin, second set are the polished out wing areas of the second two (I assume that's the area you requested)

Probably the mint worker accidentally gouge the coin when they polished the reverse (1st and 2nd coin die state).
That makes the 3rd coin being EDS where the left wing has not been polished, no pitting and no gouge.

Agreed. Especially at that location. The worker probably dinged the edge of the die on something either creating the gouge outright and he didn't catch it, or it weakened the metal and its progressive to die use post ding.
