Please Check you 1878 P VAM 14.8 coins

Post by twohawks » Tue Jan 08, 2019 4:09 pm

Below are some photos of my 14.8 , and it has a few things that are not on my non PL coin and I don't remember this stuff on the Proof I sold to Ash. This coin has a light gouge or polishing burn line running thought the "O" of "OF" and it has rather deep polishing lines everywhere in the fields on the reverse. I see a few of the polishing lines in the no PL AU example I have, not nowhere near what's viewed om the PL coin.

Both of my 14.8s are AUs, but they still match what you are seeing.
When in doubt... don't.

Wasn't this always the pup on the reverse?

That polish line is on my 62 DMPL but it tough to see unless you look at it from 3:00 position.

I just cant make it out on my AU coins. I personally don't remember this ever being a PUP, and I never really looked at all the strong polishing lines in the reverse fields

This post made me take longer looks at my 14.8s. The lines on the reverse that Russ mentioned are pretty awesome. (Had to tilt my AU58 and still PL-ish coin to get things to show.)

One question: I this thing strike doubled like crazy, or is huge doubling also a feature of 14.8?

Both. Remember that repunched and strike doubled CC I posted a while back? You have a doubled die and strike doubling. Cool, educational piece, and weird as all get-out to look at.

John:
What's crazy is, my other 14.8 looks identical to the one I photographed.

Well, I imagine a bouncy press isn't isolated to a single coin, and that the likelihood of any given coin being strike doubled as it is struck varies slowly over time. Put another way, if coin n is strike doubled, chances are coin n+1 will be, too.

My 14.8 63PL has the gouge line thru the O. Its probably an ultra early strike too, so they all should have it.

In the for what it is worth department. My AU 50 no longer has the light gouge through the O or any of the neat polishing lines, but the legend shows the doubling.
