1882-S VAM-36A/37A die chip wing tip

Post by Unc90o » Fri May 22, 2020 5:12 am

One of the photo on VAM-37A shows die chip at end of right wing. Well, my coin has that, but I'm pretty sure mine is v36A. So is this reverse photo with die chip wing tip shown on VAM-37A should be for 36A? Or ?

Also, on VAM-36 page, there is plate photo showing polishing lines by NIT. I think based on description, this plate photo belongs to VAM-37A.

Tagging @CascadeChris @fogie to look at these pages and determine what's right and what's wrong.

In all honesty, that sub return confused the heck out of me so I put it away and have been meaning to come back to it some time. I think Leroys letter is posted in a thread linked to one or all of the pages from that sub. See if his words make sense out of it. If you can't find the letter tag me again and I'll find and post it here directly.

Chris,
I know what you meant, LOL. Let's tackle this one by one.

My coin has this die chip on the wing tip. But the Obverse is a dead match to v36/36a.
Could you or someone please double check if this die chip is in fact on your v37a coin?

The die chip (Eagle's right wing tip) is on a coin that is made from the exact same die pair as what made the 1882-S VAM1B Discovery piece (now known as VAM37A). Said discovery piece is an earlier die state as it does not have the tiny chip on the wing tip. All my VAM37 (8) and 37A (4) have the reverse die markers shown below. My VAM 36A does not.

The lines by the NIT are from the VAM36A. One of my 1882-SVAM37A has a line or two that are very close to those seen on the 36A but side by side there is a profound difference. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the respond, but I'm more confused now.
On my coin, the obverse clearly shows a vertical die scratch above top right of I in LIBERTY. And the Phrygian cap is slightly doubled at top edge. This coin has to be VAM-36 obverse die.
The reverse has the tiny die chip at top of right wing. No die scratches in field by NIT.

Perhaps if you don't mine, when Leroy is ready to accept submission again, I would like to borrow your coins. VAM-37A one with die chip and another that has no chip for comparison when I send all to LVA.

Thanks

How can I help Nico? If you need me to dig out any of the DC's and snap some shots let me know. And if you need to borrow any for LVA you got it of course..
