1896-S help needed

Post by DHalladay » Wed Oct 09, 2019 4:25 pm

Despite there being only 10 VAMs for this date (so far), I'm really stumped with this coin. It's a crusty toned XF40, and the crusty/toned isn't making things any easier. I can't find any cracks anywhere.

It's a near date with what looks like a very low S mint mark, a combination that makes identification a huge mystery because there don't appear to be any very low S VAMs.

The other problem is, I have been able to eliminate 9 of the 10 currently known VAM possibilities:
– It's not a 1A because there is no die chip in the upper left wreath.
– It doesn't appear to be a 2 because the 6 is not doubled.
– There is no VAM 3.
– it's not a 4 or 7 because my mint mark is too low.
– It's not a 5 because my date is much closer.
– It's not a 6 because my coin's 6 is not doubled.
– It's not an 8 because my mint mark is too low.
– It's not a 9 because my date is not that far left.
– It's not a 10 because my mint mark is too low.

That leaves VAM 1 through the process of elimination, but that doesn't seem to fit either because my mint mark looks lower than the photo on our attribution page.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

When in doubt... don't.

I'm probably incorrect...but is it possible the "S" has been added? The date position on yours doesn't seem to match Vam 1 either. Mystery! :)

Thanks for looking!
It's in a PCGS-40 holder with a CAC sticker, so an added mint mark seems extremely unlikely.

Then....you're sayin' there's a chance? Sorry. I'm an idiot. Lol. I'm sure someone that knows what they are talking about will have an explanation! 8-)

Well, PCGS did certify a combined 95 examples of the 1896, 1900, and 1902 Micro-O coins before it figured out they were counterfeit, and CAC put stickers on two of mine, so yes, I guess there is a chance!

So poking the "S" with a stick is out...

I think I'll give the Leroy stick a try. ;)
