Re: Trade Dollar article in Coin World

One small fact not in the article: From 1873-1878 Trade dollars were included in the Annual Assay Commission coins. From 1879-1885 no Trade dollars were included. The Assay Commission did not examine medals.

Re: Letter about error Morgan dollar - 1885

The mint's reply, if there was one, might state the cause.

Normal procedure in 1889 would have been to replace the coin.

Trade Dollar article in Coin World

For those who have branched out into Trade dollars this article, titled "Proof Trade Dollars Continued After Coinage Was Discontinued," might be of interest. The article explores continued manufacture of proof Trade dollars after commercial production was halted. This might be of interest to Trade d...

Re: Apparent increase in 1921 Peace dollar comments in hobby media.

To attain this degree of detail required a fully annealed (soft) planchet, and pressure over 150 tons on a mint toggle press. In this instance the die was nearly new, as is shown by both details and the satin-like surfaces. This is characteristic of a steel die before it develops surface deformities...

Re: VAM Weed Killer. To encourage new collectors to grow...

[/quote] The problem is who picks the "the best, most readily identifiable varieties" and then is there a market for that list or will it just be another list like the others? From one who had thousands of silver dollars prior to learning about vams, the complexity and minutiae were a great help wit...

Apparent increase in 1921 Peace dollar comments in hobby media. Sample coin.

There seems to be an increase in threads and posts about 1921 Peace dollars on various hobby message boards. Presumably this is a by product of this year's centennial of the design, and Congress' mandate to produce a commemorative version of the design. Because much of the long-term value in these o...

Re: VAM Weed Killer. To encourage new collectors to grow...

Several members make good defensive points, but all center on this little phrase: "To some extent." Can one not select the best, most readily identifiable varieties, then present them in a new non-threatening (hopefully 'engaging') format? K.I.S.S.-off the complexity and minutiae in favor of broad i...

VAM Weed Killer. To encourage new collectors to grow...

...should VAMWorld sponsor a weed killer? Possible new VAM collectors are, at least anecdotally, discouraged by the vast weedy patch that is the VAM listings. There is, simply put, too much "weed" and not enough "flower" to engage a beginner. Is anyone working on a simplified VAM publication (a "wee...

Re: 1891-CC

I'll have to disagree with the consensus. The metal "missing" due to tapering of the star is insufficient to produce the raised oval lump on the star. There is no evidence of unusual abrasion or metal movement in that area. The oval lump is symmetrical and does not have the irregular appearance of d...

Re: ANA, Will it survive?

One route to relevance for ANA begins with delivering a high profile service to the hobby and business. 1) Take a very aggressive, hands-on, active approach to getting rid of counterfeiters, their manufacture, importation, distribution, sale and transfer. Let everyone in and out of the hobby know th...

Re: ANA, Will it survive?

Just some personal thoughts on the OP's question. ANA lost is way about 25 years ago. They abrogated their inherent authority and credibility for coin grading standards and terminology standards, thus leaving collectors at the legal mercy of overgraded and falsely described coins. They also failed t...

A couple of folks asked about data for 1889. Work began on 1889 transcriptions this week. There is a lot of correspondence for this year, so it will take at least 4 to 6 weeks to complete.

Re: Tampered dies.

So anyone have insights as to what “varieties” might be out there for 1882-s $5 & $10 gold coins for grins and chuckles? There is an account of the alterations in a letter from Snowden, which is reproduced in From Mine to Mint in a section about unauthorized die modifications. It seems to be the IG...

The software should also allow you to select the shank width (in pixels) and the head type/shape/length. That will let you define arrows (like the one in my illustration) to your liking, then scale them to photos of differing resolutions.

PS: Interesting reverse clashes, too!
