OT A Little

Related to the recent debacle with the issuance of 2021 Privy Morgans is what seems to me to be a significant hike in the price of upper end gold and silver coins, especially proof. One of my complete sets at PCGS is Proof and Regular strike Gold Buffaloes. In the early days these were priced above ...

Re: 2021 Morgans Postponed

In the "always been this way" notion, I am listening to a podcast that goes through the Presidential races one at a time starting with Washington. Fake news goes all the way back to Jefferson, so nothing new. Greed probably goes all the way back to Moses.

Re: What would you do ?

If you can take a payment in some electronic form then keep going, otherwise cancel the sale. I haven't bought a coin with a check in over a decade and I am not sure I would given clearing times.

Re: 2021 Morgans Postponed

My experience would say that the normal collector does not load up the phone lines and buy 10 at a time. The dealers may have followed the mint's rules, but if so they may need to revisit the rules. This is the same way ticket scalpers lock out fans from an event and force prices higher. I believe t...

Re: 4th NO Super; 6 Die Crack VAMs, and a little fun cypher

I have seen an increase in attempts to contact me through the "Contact Us" link on the 1881-O web site. That link is not working and if you want to contact me please do so here or on my personal email.

Re: 2021 Morgans Postponed

Well if we needed any confirmation that the Mint is collaborating with dealers and leaving consumers out in the cold just look at eBay. There are a lot of dealers selling the privy coins in lots of 10 or more.

4th NO Super; 6 Die Crack VAMs, and a little fun cypher

The newsletter for May is up and running for the 1881-O by clicking here http://www.1881o.com/2021-05.html We continued on with the Die Crack analysis by examining VAMs 15, 41, 51, 71, 17, and 19. We also took a look at the fourth Mint Supervisor, Charles F. Bienvenu and the events surrounding his b...

Re: 2021 Morgans Postponed

From my understanding, by law, the U.S Mint procures it's Silver, Gold, Platinum & Palladium for the next fiscal year by contract on Oct. 1st then takes delivery the last week in November. Any idea if my memory was right and they must use US sources? Also, I think the industrial uses of silver have...

Re: 2021 Morgans Postponed

I think I remember that they can only use domestically mined silver, and that might be tricky in a shortage. Also, I haven't looked at this in years, but the gold and silver numbers are interesting. https://usdebtclock.org/gold-precious-metals.html Dollar to Gold ratio in 1913 $28.73, today $33,928 ...

2021 Morgans Postponed

Just got a notice from the Mint that the rest of the Morgans are postponed due to the silver shortage

How can there be a silver shortage when the market price never moves up more than a few dollars?

Go figure!

Re: Mint Site Cashed

Maybe we need to cozy up to some Mint officials if we want them for VAMers. We probably do more to enhance the value of Morgans than anyone else out there.

Re: Mint Site Cashed

I was closed out also, but I think they sold 175,000 of each mint mark, so once the dust settles and we know how many MS70 coins graded that may be a better path. I have been less excited about these since I saw them and would pick them up as an oddity and not a real Morgan or collectible. I believe...

Re: I would have called it PMD....

Sorry I did not consider that, they have reissued so many old labels in marketing their grading that I don't trust my knowledge of labels any more

The speed and consistency of grading seems to be an issue right now that I hope is resolved in the right direction.

Re: "2021" Morgan and Peace dollar imitations from Mint

I believe the change in die creation through the past 100 years and all the technology will make these look a lot more like SAE's than Morgans. I also think we are going to see a lot fewer errors to study.

Thanks for the note and encouragement. The final lead into the Civil War era should get even more interesting. New Orleans never lacks political intrigue so it is fun to research.

Re: "2021" Morgan and Peace dollar imitations from Mint

On my first look at the images on the mint web site I had several observations 1. The relief will be more like the SAE with soft lettering and devices, and maybe higher relief on Liberty 2. The degree of accuracy is likely to be better than the originals just because of the improvements in technolog...
