Re: 1878 S VAM 17 Somthing Progression Photos

Wow. Thanks for posting. I realize that there are hundreds of progressions to appreciate. By happenstance, I just happen to take an interest in this one. If possible, I would like to see the polishing lines in the hair valley for this coin. I know that others are practiced in estimating state accord...

Re: 1878 S VAM 17 Somthing Progression Photos

Considering the progression of the 1883-O VAM-31 and 1883-O VAM-31A for the lines in the D void; the lines in the hair valley of the Rod's coin appear thicker. Thus, the later minting. Agreed.

Re: 1878 S VAM 17 Somthing Progression Photos

VAM-17. Was the gouge worn away or polished away? Hard to compare the photographs, but based on the fineness of the crack at the bust point, Rod's coin appears to be the earlier minting. But, I suppose this is impossible if Rod's coin shows a remnant of the same gouge.

Judging from the bust line only, compensating for softness in focus; same state, different stage. Agreed, interesting.

Re: 83-O....but with a possible Alligator Eye?

Your coin appears to be an undocumented stage of VAM-15 / VAM-38 . If the person you are helping has this coin in-hand, you may notice a clashed n along the neckline and a weakly clashed t at the hair V. Your coin may be the one to convincingly show these clashes. Beautiful coin. Perhaps a future V3...

Re: Attribution 101 Subheading Definition Table

I reread page 139 of the 4th Edition for what seems like the hundredth time. It seems that, in 1991, LVA defined the "g" of C3g as the "Working Die Varieties" (for the reverse). Note that "Varieties" is pleural. Further this is the tertiary qualification of a taxonomy labeled "Die Classification Sys...

Re: Attribution 101 Subheading Definition Table

Thank you for the advice. I have "learned to live with it" for years. My inquiry was whether the earlier definition for the g of C3g accurately reflected the "way it is." I neglected to include the next sentence after Slade suggested a "DIE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM." Van Allen wrote about Slade's advoc...

Re: 1888-P VAM-7??

Rod, I hope you don't mind, but I embedded these SDP images to make them a bit more accessible. The thumbnails are from cache. The links are to the Real McCoy. The in-line performance should be acceptable. I have been away for a while. Nice photograph of that doubled ear. Loren Click to view in high...

Re: Attribution 101 Subheading Definition Table

Thank you. The definition for the g of C3g on the Attribution 101 subheading topic now reads. "Identification letter for a specific variation of the reverse hub." Hub, not die? I still am not appreciating why the phrase "specific variation" is not replaced by "classification." I know that, over the ...

Re: 1888-P VAM-7??

Hey Rod. Great photographs. I am reminded by the second comment for VAM-7B that I am uncertain of the "states." As I recall, you archived the VWMB01 post by J. Roberts regarding stage versus state. Might you please post (or PM) a link to this information? Thanks. Loren

Re: 1883 O Proof like?

My attribution of V62 was based on the cap fold and the mint mark positioning . The easiest way to verify the reverse for V62 is to check for the presence of the left wing die scratches . Study the micro-architecture of LIBERTY by viewing the LFCPs on the SDP VNA-04 topic page. Click on an LFCP and ...

Attribution 101 Subheading Definition Table

I recently consulted the wiki Attribution 101 topic page and noted the wording for the definition of the "g" in the subheading table of explanations. The "g" of C3g is currently defined as the "Identification number for a specific die." Shouldn't this definition be changed to "Identification letter ...

Re: 1883 O Proof like?

Again, grading based on photographs is tough. Your second photograph posted, albeit short on focus and detail, suggests PL+ to me. I am basing this on contrast between the devices and field. Others may chime in. Good luck with the grading.

Re: 1883 O Proof like?

Photographs are always deceptive. I would estimate MS62 and maybe PL. Grading is not my forte. Are the reflected letters of a 12 pt font clearly visible from more than 4" away from the coin? My avatar is raw, but likely PL/DMPL.

Re: 1883 O Proof like?

This coin appears to have been minted by the VAM-62 die pair. Check for the left wing die scratches to verify the reverse. Additional high resolution images that may aid verification are available on the SDP VNA-04 topic page. This variety is found in high grades with mirror surfaces.

They are not extremely rare. I have picked up a few in the past few years. Passed over more than I purchased. As expected, have never seen a 33.
