1898-O VAM-5 Page

The images on the page are for a VAM-27A. Some of them are old ones of mine, before the later ones were discovered. Some might be okay, but the large coin is definitely 27A as well as the bit about the unique cracks.

Re: NEW 1926-S VAM 3AA

Added to the Registry.

Yeah, really sad too. Hope looking at silver dollars and getting short letters form VAMmers gives him a little social contact relief. (Maybe I will send him some Peace dollars and a little letter soon.)

Re: Last VAM picks

Thanks alefzero and jasonkflo I just went through a ton of 1884 Morgans and not a single VAM-3. Not that they are really, really rare, but they seemed to have dried up in the wild. You got a nice looking one too. I already have an AU53 and wish this will upgrade. From previous sales prices posted b...

Re: 1898-S

Here is an excellent obverse die marker, parallel diagonal die scratches in the lower ear void. BTW, the ear bottom and upper hair does exhibit some minor doubling. Having seen this so much, I am convinced this was in one of the III2 hubs and has ended up (erroneously IMO) in some of the die listing...

Re: 1898-S

It is clearly the same reverse as the VAM-14. The polish at the bow was uncertain. But there is a characteristic crack on this coin that can also be seen in both of the full coin reverse photos for VAM-14. That this also has the crack through the right wing, from ED to above the S, indicates this wa...

Re: 1898-S

It might have weak claims to a slanted date. Sure wish we had the VAM-11 discovery coin. ANACS has only attributed a F12 for the variety and wonder when that was. I could look in the old ANACS pop reports (back when the services actually charged for them as print copies), but JR would know. 1898-S-1...

OT - A little flashback

Someone ruined the value of this by replacing the handle. NEVER clean, dip, or tone your carts! Altering them is the worst offense of all. Still this has a strong claim to XF details as long as it has not been repainted. Wheels appear original and naturally toned. https://www.collectorsweekly.com/st...

Re: FUN VAM Dinner Substitute?

Question, and I could probably figure it out if I had a little time. For those on PCs/MACs, rather than smart phones, is it straightforward or possible to switch the video feed between the cam and, say, the USB Dino-Lite? It could serve a number of purposes in using Zoom or other conferencing (or P2...

Re: 1898-S

Here is that diagnostic crack. Notice that it veers to the denticles above the S, whereas it goes into the S on the VAM-10. 1898-S-11-5.jpg It is close to the VAM-14, which has no crack in the coin imaged here, but that could always develop later. But the die polish at the leg and the bow are not ma...

1898-S

I recently (meaning just a few days ago) was looking at 1898-S and some interesting things arose. First, something odd was happening at the San Francisco Mint that year. Multiple different obverse dies exhibit a crack in the same relative position in the lower hair, sometimes developing into a break...

Re: FUN Show Cancelled

I had planned not to go months earlier, yet I'm still sad that the show has been canceled. Not for the in-person buying and selling that won't happen, but for the in-person camaraderie that won't happen – which has always been the best part of FUN for me. Even if Florida had relaxed the dining rule...

Re: O.T. kind of.....

And some just plain post in the wrong categories. Happens to the best and most organized. The ones that get me are bust halves in early dollars. Twice I almost pulled the trigger on "an unlisted dollar" only to then note the base of the bust being that of the half. The "early" dollar category name a...

Re: One PCGS Order Grades In

Here is the TrueView for that BB-181. For those unfamiliar with these, the PUPs are the die poop around the 11th star on the obverse (adjacent to Liberty's chin) and the leaf connected to the lower right corner of the I/AMERICA on the reverse. 40129417_medium.jpg I agree on that and a handful of oth...

Re: PCGS sold to Cohen or soon to be sold

Going back to private can be a very good thing but it actually could go both ways. The big advantage is that the investors can be a bit more patient on results, whereas being chained to the SEC opens a listed company to class action suits and board shuffles over short-horizon fiduciary disagreements.
