Re: Do I have a 1902-O VAM 1?

Your coin has more than just the cracks. But try VAM-34.

OT 1983-P Jeff Nickel Promo

Just curious, has anyone seen this before and know what it is? I spent time searching but came up empty. The coin has gun gray toning, not that it matters much. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Do I have a 1902-O VAM 1?

The bottom two photos of the date make it look like a Very Near Date, or very close to that. The only die pair known with this date placement and a filled 2 is the VAM-19. Sometimes photo angles can make things appear different than a straight on photo shot. The 02-Os were a bear to attribute 25 yea...

Re: Do I have a 1902-O VAM 1?

Upon further review, I suspect highly this is a VAM-19. Check your coin for a C4/C3 reverse. Also check for the small gouge inside the U of PLURIBUS.

Re: Do I have a 1902-O VAM 1?

By the way, if the near date was missed by the attributor, then maybe the revere type was also missed.

If you have a C4/C3 reverse, try V19, V31A, V61 (oops from previous post), and V73 Die 2.

Re: Do I have a 1902-O VAM 1?

Since it is attributed as a VAM-1, then technically it is a C4 reverse. If it is, the only filled 2 candidates I have cataloged with a near date and C4 reverse are V44A, V51A, and V61. Since I don't see the crack for the LDS V51A at the date, try the other two. But yeah, knowing if it is a C4 or C4/...

How about saying the V27A was recently "listed" instead of recently "discovered"? This is a pet peeve of mine, sorry.

Re: VAM kills/revisions 10/5/2020

Congrats David. I have had a saying for a while, which I have shared before. "Interesting why the VAM listings have to expand before they contract". Or, to put it another way, why do the VAMs that get eventually de-listed, get listed in the first place? Hope all is well for everyone.

Re: Amber Alert - 1894S Worm Eye

RD1 is the one with the gouge at 6-7 lower tail feathers and is a single use die. RD6 is a late die state reverse where a gouge on the EDS has been polished down. See below. This reverse die was used with 3 different obverse dies. RD13 is a single use die. There was a LOT of die incest at the SF Min...

Amber Alert - 1894S Worm Eye

Just finished a die study of the 1894-S series. It appears that the VAM-1A Worm Eye obverse was hijacked and paired with three different reverse dies. The gouge at eagle's 6-7 lower tail feathers is only present on one of the reverses. Check your Worm Eye's for the correct reverse. There are two new...

Re: Suggestion - Would a standard reference grid make attribution easier?

In all fairness, I did not create the DPIS (date placement indexing system) that I use for my die studies that MD references. I borrowed it from JR from his 89-CC series study. I may have refined it a bit, but that is irrelevant. I think JR may have borrowed the idea from researchers of other denomi...

Virtual VAM Thing?

I know I am probably not the only one that would really like to attend an in-person FUN Show and VAM Thing next January. But somehow I wonder if there will be one or both. If there is, it will look quite different than in the past. This goes for both the FUN Show and VAM Thing. I don't like throwing...

Re: Proof of existence? VAM-130 or 185? (1878)

Having done die studies and having tried to get a "complete" VAM set of the die study series, it is annoying at the least when there are empty nester's (red-haired step-children") that will never be delisted. Thus, "holes" will occur in the "complete" set. But if you want a complete clashed E set, y...

Die studies are cool things, especially when the best of the best in the hobby get together, share coins and have an outcome. Congrats to all involved. Very cool study and sequence and conclusions!!!!!!!

Re: 1902-O Which VAM

I believe Lee has has a winner. VAM-44. The gouge under eagle's neck feathers seems to be there. Look for the scratches in Liberty's front hair. Sometimes they are hard to see or discern.
