Re: 1878 Vam 14.11 GC

Hated the way that 60 looked or I would have bought it a couple of months ago

Re: 1879-S Rev of 1878

Didn't have 20 raw 79-S Rev of 78 pieces in AU/MS condition laying around but here is a side by side of stacks of twenty. An assortment of dollars with the Rev of 78 is on the left. As you can see the difference is slight.

Yeah, I bid what I thought was competitive money for the grade. Couple of people wanted it far more than I did.

I was the high bidder until just under a minute from the end. Getting stomped is easier to take than a single increment sniper shot.

Re: 1889 VAM 7B/VAM 60

Agree this would now qualify as the current VAM 7A. Andy's coin is interesting - later than VAM 7B with another polish job. The reverse die in this progression had a long and eventful life

Re: 1889 VAM 7B/VAM 60

Yeah, different states of same marriage. I have my old 89 doubled ear attribution notes and this had been called VAM 30 for a while before a different marriage got listed as VAM 30. That one is now VAM 15. I have a note that I've called the VAM 60 (before it got listed) VAM 7 after the changes with ...

Is it my imagination or is the clearly fake raw piece showing a reeded edge?

I'll ask this question. Do any of Barber's letters on any die related subject indicate he ever made a mistake personally?

Re: New take on 1889 VAM 23A

I'd be interested in pictures of what you have as a VAM 23 I accept that VAM 7B is the same thing as VAM 60. I don't think it's particularly relevant to the story though. It's a normal reverse that struck a bunch of dollars. It's the later stage VAM 60 that's the duplication and I'd defy anyone to s...

Re: Suggestion - Would a standard reference grid make attribution easier?

That wasn't my point. and a grid might help. It's not the first time it's been suggested. As you know, there were several design changes in the Morgan series. This included the location of the denticles. I was pointing out that they are fixed among coins of the same specific design - i.e. the main r...

Russ 'courtesy' of Pete. I got to watch part of the show the next morning when he was getting ready to leave the hotel. Still kinda makes me laugh now. I've been a past 'awardee' but I didn't have to fly with it

Only the central design elements are fixed. Denticles are not fixed in relation to the portrait and thus cannot be used for reliable positions..
Might want to double check that

Re: Suggestion - Would a standard reference grid make attribution easier?

I've also seen this sort of thing before. Dr Mark Kimpton had done something similar to note die clash positions, but I think he abandoned it because of the die stage issue JB mentioned. A grid can be useful, but it has limits - mainly human error in the alignment.

Re: New take on 1889 VAM 23A

Now to be fair, even if the VAM 23A is triple clashed, that is largely irrelevant to the present discussion. It's not like there are different stages of the 23A - if there is a multiple clash, it's from successive strikes with no coins produced in between. It still doesn't account for the weirdness ...
