Re: When striking pressure is too high

Looks like the very definition of FUBAR. There's something to be said for not pissin' off a man with a coining press.

Dan Carr Anniversary Dollar

I just got my example today, a faithful recreation of the 1921-D Morgan struck over a genuine 21-D dollar. I'll be curious to see how his work compares to the mint's 2021 recreations.

Re: PCGS pop report mystery

So it actually is random BS? Mr Cleveland had absolutely nothing to do with the Morgan Dollar by almost a century.

Re: PCGS pop report mystery

Betting this is a typo and the ten pieces are actually dated 2021. I'll leave the merits of the Cleveland Blue Eagle labels up to people that actually trade in moderns.

Re: 1921-P Morgan Mystery

The original VAM 2 was not an infrequent reeding listing. It was a generic D2 with claimed reverse doubling that's on pretty much all of them. The holder doesn't say it is infrequent reeding. Listings have changed multiple times over the years and this is one of them. And yeah, slabbed about twenty ...

Re: 1922-P Peace Dollar---Wing Die Break and numerous die chips/gouges?

It's worth adding that further examination of the coin made the original poster look at the coin differently. If you can re-evaluate based on others experienced opinions then this piece may be the most valuable 'variety' you'll ever encounter.

Re: 1922-P Peace Dollar---Wing Die Break and numerous die chips/gouges?

It's all damage. The 'wing break' is a reed mark. It has been hit right near the edge of one of the feather rows with the reeding of another dollar. The 'chips' are deliberate damage - period. The cause is irrelevant, but some hardened implement had been jabbed into the reverse repeatedly. The crate...

Re: Help needed with 1901-O Morgan (Appears to be a cast counterfeit)

I'm dubious of this being treated with mercury. That's an 'old-school' cleaning method and leaves a very unnatural looking shine without hairlining the surface. You'd typically find it on Bust Dollars and Capped Bust Half Dollars.

Re: 1880-P VAM33A VS. 33B

Yeah, there's no "The E won't be there' marker. This B stage is a result of die wear taking out a barely visible E .
It's the type of coin that all but defines the special hell it is to be a vammer.

There's a trace of the I in the original LVA plate. I don't see a clashed t visible in your images. Think this would just get called VAM 1B

Re: 1883-CC Need Help Attributing

Yeah, they get fainter in later stages. Nothing definitive jumped out in your pictures. It's more about what's not there. No line in the wing, so the VAM 5 series is out. The mintmark position eliminates VAM 4. It also doesn't look quite right for VAM 8 and the diagnostic scratch from the e of we do...
