Re: 81-O Presentation from VAM Thing XV

There are many more presentations from several years of VAM Thing produced by David Lisot that he has graciously provided to the Newman portal

I agree, some skillful hand work. Looks like a good deal of circulation after the fact to smooth the whole thing over. Kinda cool example of graffiti.

Re: What did I just step in??

Just a hell of a lot of solid research by one person to document every known die pair for this date. Still, it pales in comparison to the number of marriages that qualify as 21 VAM 3 and that's not even counting scribbles.

Re: Part 2 of the 1884-CC and 1883-O Branch Mint Suspects

Fine...explain away the bagmarks. A branch mint goes to the trouble of making a special and limited issue, then casually tosses them into the pile that lands in bags? The recognized and widely accepted examples of branch mint proofs (or specimen strikes) were handled with far greater care. Your 84-C...

You're obviously convinced you're right, so any discussion seems pointless. Send them in and get them certified by a reputable service.

Re: Baltimore show report

Thought we settled on 'Stubby' - it looks like someone could have gotten hurt when that obverse clashed. The reverse got swapped out, so it was probably a fatal stroke

Re: New 88-S variety

BTW, fogie's example is very similar. I'm betting the crack was there, partially polished away, then came back after a few strikes. There's a void in the cap just under the fold that takes out part of the leaf above the right boll

Re: Baltimore show report

Bought an 1860-O half dime with an absolutely wild clash from Brian. Didn't buy much else, but had a couple of great dinners. Walked over to Little Italy with Doc and his wife and Jack Lee. Found Gia's again as I couldn't remember the name but I did recall the sidewalk tables and the grilled octopus...

Re: New 88-S variety

I'll post a pic or two when I get back from Baltimore. Maybe I'll do this as a future 'About VAMs' column. I picked the piece up as a 'just buy something' piece after I'd been hanging at a table for a while

New 88-S variety

I'll wait to make a new page when the new site is up, but I just got back the new discovery piece for what is now the 1888-S VAM 5A. The base die pair has a minor slanted date, but the late die stage just listed has a break from the top of the cap to the 2nd U of PLURIBUS that got heavy die polishin...
