Re: 1922 S Is this PMD or something else?

A reed hit was my first thought, but there appears to be file lines within the raised area that that run perpendicular to the gouges. That is what is confusing me at this point.

Looks like there might have been a double clash that was scrubbed.

1922 S Is this PMD or something else?

At first I thought that this was a hit from the edge of another coin, but it appears to be file lines/gouges. Any thoughts? @Messydesk and @Vampicker, I would love to hear your opinions on this. I am surprised that a lamination could survive through all that wear. I love stuff like this.

Sorry, Ant. That is not a G clash. Where the clash occurred on your coin, the G would be in the area of the middle of Liberty's neck.

Sorry, Ant, there is no G clash. The neck clash is under the n and does not reach the n, so no letter transfer.

Re: 1924 P Help Needed, Please

Nothing at the E. Crack thru T. Pics of both areas are above. Can't match the T crack, which seems too small to be listable. Also, it may not even be a crack; it could be surface discoloration. Thanks.

Re: 1924 P Help Needed, Please

Bumping to the top. I keep staring at this under the scope and loupe and still can't see anything other than the wierd surface wear. I am about ready to call this VAM 1 except for the the die wear. Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Re: 1883-O VAM"38"... Confirmed w. 2nd Coin! Finally! New Pics For Consideration. Help Me Learn...

Ant, You can pick up nice 10x and 30x loupes for about $7-10 each on ebay. They work just fine. I keep a 10x at the office and have a 30x as well as a stereo microscope at home. I also keep a loupe in my car just in case I stop somewhere on a whim. Hang in there and keep reading and looking at coins...

Re: 1883-O VAM"38"... Confirmed w. 2nd Coin! Finally! New Pics For Consideration. Help Me Learn...

Simple rule to follow: if it goes into the coin and leaves an impression on the coin, whether it is a gouge, or a scratch or a divot, or even obliterating a feature like a letter, an arrowhead or a nose, it is just noise. It is not part of the die. If what you are looking at is raised up out of the ...

Re: 1883-O VAM"38"... Confirmed w. 2nd Coin! Finally! New Pics For Consideration. Help Me Learn...

Using your example, the mint workers repair the die during minting, and that repair leaves a raised circle that can be called a nose ring, that significant modification to the die MAY result in a new VAM 38A designation or it may not. The die is the die, and by extension, the VAM is the VAM until th...

Re: 1883-O VAM"38"... Confirmed w. 2nd Coin! Finally! New Pics For Consideration. Help Me Learn...

Ant, First, the terminology; coins don't clash. When we talk about clashes we are talking about the obverse die and reverse die hitting each other with force and no planchet (coin blank) in between. When you talk about two coins hitting each other, that is not a clash. Most of what you are looking a...

Re: 1924 P Help Needed, Please

Thanks, John. That's what I thought, but didn't know what I was looking at. I have coins with this partial line on either side of the coin that is centered in the rim and follows the arc. I did not know if this was part of the design or something else. I have never seen a collar clash in person, eit...
