Re: Hypothetical question

There was a run on 78S V17EDS coins in PCGS Holders that hit ebay a few years go. Many are registered in the SSDC. All have sequential numbers on the holders. I suspected that they all came from an old roll. But there is no rule of thumb for bags or rolls. JMHO

Re: I need help, with 1878 S diagonal wing die gouges

That snooger in the nostril and the chip on the cheek indicates a V80. Looks like die wear is in play here. Not a V89. I'd say V80. TDITD though. tim

15,80, and 89 share this reverse. 15 & 80 are common. 89 is the stopper. Did you check your coin against V80, Bert. I couldn't see the obverse well enough to VAM it. Nice pictures as always, tiny

Re: 1878-S Attribution Help Needed

Surprised the VAM Page doesn't have any full coin pictures. Then again Im not. Some are willing to share and help and others want to hold the secretes. I spent years populating the 78S pages. I barely come on here once or twice a week, if that. tiny

Re: A clarification of why Roger Burdette is posting on VAM World

A Master work on coinage is a book called From Mine to Mint. A must read for the Silver Dollar Collector. Read it twice. With a highlighter marker.
"American Coinage Operations and Technology 1833 to 1937".

Re: 1878s VAM-100

VAM 100 is a tough coin in any grade. Total population in SSDC is 11 coins. Only two in MS.

Re: 78s with weird wings

V 55 & 75 share the same reverse. 75 would have a chip above cotton leaves in cap. Full coin pictures dont show well. 55 has a die chip below jaw line in hair curl. No pictures clearly show either. Close up pictures are very nice. Just doesn't show money shots. 55 is more likely. Only 150 VAMs to me...

There was a clash event and polishing took place. Somewhere out there is a clashed VAM 8. I been looking for one for years.

Re: 1878 s

The Long Knock Reverse is the B1 and the second reverse was the B2 and had a Short Knock on the center arrow. Any letter after B2 would be a specific reverse other than what Leroy considered a plain Jane B2. Others with more knowledge of the subject can answer your question about dies. B2W had a lon...
