Hello, Could it be a steel mesh or iron shaving from a machine shop, allitle h2o + time. It looks like it would rub off... or atleast stain deposit lift. We will never know. My guess is anything we can find in our environment could interact with a coin. Electricity, radiation, chemicals, including all mentioned; combined. Then throw in a bunch of stuff we don't even know about, making it all hard to pin down. Experimentation with minimal damage....great idea, imo. If on...

I see in your photos the residue after clean-up on steel mortar working tools. An alkaline reaction.
