1888-S Morgan Dollar Die Study

If you recall, in a post a while back I mentioned that the number of assigned VAMs and mintage of the 1888-S dollars seemed out of whack. With 16 base VAMs and a mintage of 657K, that would equal 41K coins per VAM. So I did a die study. The results are interesting, at least to me. I identified 12 ob...

The 2x2s look kinda anal. But the WOW coin has me guessing the squirrel. But that is just a guess.

Re: 1878 VAM 9 First Die Pair

I bought a holed 3 cent silver one time to fill out the collection. My brother was a custom jeweler for decades so I asked him to fill the hole to see` what would happen. He did a decent job, but it didn't get past the graders at ANACS as a problem free coin. I would leave it alone. I may actually s...

Seriously, is the self quarantining getting to some? JR is the nicest, most even-keeled person I know. I just don't get this type of thread.

Re: Acetone geyser.. PSA

I basically do only Morgans. I use acetone regularly, with mixed results depending on the coin's problems, but it does do a great job on PVC. I have never soaked a coin in acetone for over an hour. Might be one of my problems. If the acetone doesn't take care of the issue right away, then I rinse an...

I can't tell from your photos. Can you take clearer photos without the distortion? In the meantime, try VAM-43 Die Pair 2, but I don't think that is it.

Re: Summer fun!! 2020

Not that this will convince anyone to go to Summer FUN. I am currently in Orlando and have been for a few weeks off and on since February. Doc is right, the cases are dwindling here in Orange County. My wife and I do not venture out unless we have to. But there may be enough time between now and Jul...

Re: 1880-O Question

I usually try and stay out of this type of thread, but since I am bored, I will jump in. Try to visualize what the die had to look like if this feature was in the die. Not possible. Looks exactly like the S took took a sideswipe from another coin's rim, which is common PMD. If you send it to someone...

This is over my birhthday. So if I am at the Orlando house over my birthday, and the show is still on. I will likely make it for at least one day. But yeah, depends on what the airlines are doing in July also.

Re: 1902 O Morgan Rotated reverse

Probably wouldn't hurt for folks to re-review this page. There are no original mint Morgans in the 1902-O Series with a C3 reverse.

Re: Attribution 101 Subheading Definition Table

I have said in the past that if folks are looking for a "scientific" and very black and white system in this hobby, they will be disappointed. This very subject has run off some very good people and VAMmers in the past. Live with it that way it is. I don't mean this in a mean way, just stating what ...

Re: 1902 O Morgan Rotated reverse

I know of only two slightly rotated dies pairs. The first is VAM-45 Die Pair 9 which when clashed is the VAM-45A. The rotation is CCW when viewed from the reverse, maybe 5 degrees. The other is VAM-38. It also is rotated about 5 degrees. but CW when viewed from the reverse. Let me know if you come u...
