The easy determinant is the edge: wrong denticles.
@RogerB I gotta ask because it's come up a few times and left me scratching my head. When you refer to 'denticles', what element are you referencing - the fluting on the edge or the interior rim teeth?

Fake, using the parents Brian mentioned. I thought this was a sandwich job when I first saw it too, but I've now seen multiples and the lumps are in the same spots.

Re: Small update on 1900-O/CC varieties

I've seen it a few places. Bowers refers to an 1899 return of leftover dies in his 'Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States A complete Encyclopedia' But a likely source of the story is Breen's Encyclopedia entry for the bold O/CC, his number 5671. He states six reverse dies were found ...

Sounds like you were right about the '1899 discovery' story being pure fabrication

Re: Do I have a 1902-O VAM 1?

That coin went into a holder long before Alan Scott did his excellent and detailed study on this date. VAM-1 is now an empty nest. If he chimes in with the correct number, please send this back to ANACS so I can update it.

Re: 1879-S Rev of 1878

Didn't have 20 raw 79-S Rev of 78 pieces in AU/MS condition laying around but here is a side by side of stacks of twenty. An assortment of dollars with the Rev of 78 is on the left. As you can see the difference is slight.

Agree this would now qualify as the current VAM 7A. Andy's coin is interesting - later than VAM 7B with another polish job. The reverse die in this progression had a long and eventful life

Re: 1889 VAM 7B/VAM 60

Yeah, different states of same marriage. I have my old 89 doubled ear attribution notes and this had been called VAM 30 for a while before a different marriage got listed as VAM 30. That one is now VAM 15. I have a note that I've called the VAM 60 (before it got listed) VAM 7 after the changes with ...
