Re: Due Diligence

I think this is a common issue since rarely does the discoverer of one VAM have examples of the others to send to Leroy. I don't know the answer other than to be sure Leroy has great photographic records or for VAMers to cooperate to submit coins together. We put Leroy in a very difficult position w...

Re: WWYD? Keep or Return?

I would return it and make a mental note of the dealer. Rarely do they clean a single coin, so they probably do them all. I know of one eBay dealer who polishes all before sales so they look prettier.

Re: Fresh Back From LVA on 1881-O VAM 1L

I am going to look at these more later tonight, but I found a fifth coin, a MS60PL which is a rare bird in itself. It has the line, but a little more faint than the other four. There are five MS coins and at first glance I could not find signs of re-polishing, but it would not have taken much to pol...

Re: Counterfeit or what?

I don't remember the exact issue, but several years back they sent a notification of certain ranges of numbers needing to be invalidated because of something like duplicates being issued. Maybe this one was caught up in that, but I seem to think it was rattlers. What does the back look like. If it h...

Re: Fresh Back From LVA on 1881-O VAM 1L

This VAM is likely to spark some further debate before being resolved, especially if the Discovery Coin cannot be located. I am reminded of the discussion around the 1881-O VAM 29. "Just because you cannot find one doesn't mean it doesn't exist. At JB's recommendation I pulled all 22 of my VAM 8 coi...

1881-O VAMs 68, 77A, and 77

After some back and forth discussions I finally had a chance to review all the VAM 68 coins in our collection. Fortunately almost all are mint state, with one as high as MS65+ and another as low as XF45. All seem to be the same as to features down to identical die cracks, even the extremely faint on...

1881-O July August Update

I am far enough through Leroy's letter of July 22 to make updates to the web site and post a progress report. http://www.1881o.com/2021-07-08.html But this letter has such far reaching implications that I am having to rethink several larger sections of the web site and I plan to tackle those before ...

Well the key is Brian and can he relocate the coin. Otherwise we are limited in our analysis to images.

Re: Fresh Back From LVA on 1881-O VAM 1L

As an added note, the fact that we don't always agree on issues like this is a real plus. It sparks debate, research, and interest. let's hope we can relocate the discovery coin and examine it in more detail.

Re: Fresh Back From LVA on 1881-O VAM 1L

Therein lies the issue. I believe the discovery piece was sold thinking it was of no particular interest. Maybe we can track it down or maybe this is another that goes into the VAM mystery box. But we might make it worth someone's time to find it or confirm it with another. Fortunately Leroy documen...

Back from LVA - New 81-O VAMs 79, 80, 81

In addition to the letter concerning the VAM 1L, I also received a letter from Leroy about a number of coins I sent in for evaluation. He has clarified the VAM 1H and VAM 40 association by deleting VAM 1H and establishing VAMs 40.1 and 40.2. I had asked for clarification because in checking my inven...

Fresh Back From LVA on 1881-O VAM 1L

This is a most interesting letter back from Leroy today confirming the existence of the VAM 1L and the die damage from a $10 Gold Eagle die. This is a unique discovery, apparently in all VAMdom!!!
