Re: 1878 s VAM 2

It won't be VAM 2. That entry in the VAM catalog was made decades ago, long before the coins were studied as closely as they are today, revealing lots of other details. The next place I'll have you look is between the eagle's right (viewer's left) leg and wing. Many 78-S reverses have hand-engraved ...

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

Strike-throughs are not generally things that are tracked individually, although some are, especially if letters are cleanly filled in with grease (see 1921-D VAM 1B2 or 1921-S VAM 6B). They are striking errors, not die varieties.

Re: 1897P NEW DIE PAIR

They should change the title to include "Bearded Eagle" since it says the 1 can be invisible, easy identifiable that way and sounds way cooler! The official titles and descriptions come from Leroy Van Allen. Those are preserved verbatim, as they specify the variety. The section on each page with ad...

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

Start with the feathers engraved between the wings and legs. This page should make reasonably quick work of an 8TF attribution.

That is a beautiful slab and I really like the clear view with the Morgan just as clear as day there. I have never seen the Vam descriptor on the reverse on the slab like that. That is fantastic. Thanks

It looks like VAM 12. I'd have to see a close-up of the eye to see what the spike is that you're referring to.

Re: 1879-CC Vam-6

VAM 6 is rather scarce, and once thought to be counterfeit until a better grade specimen showed up, but there's no premium attached to it.

Re: Do you think you have a Doubled Die?

First, thanks for reading through the intro stuff.

The N in UNUM isn't machine doubling, but it's recurring on many dies, and on some more strongly than other, so it's probably equivalent to the "Longacre" doubling, just not as pronounced as what you often see on Indian cents.

Re: 1878 VAM 9 First Die Pair

Thanks for your reply. For me, this is the one that started it all. Its the reason why we have this website to go to. Based on the facts I have seen, it was in the presence of one of our past Presidents, Rutherford Hayes. He may have even handled it. Its a connection to our past, our history. It sa...

Re: Counterfeit 1901-P Morgan ????

Well, the first thing that caught my eye was the fact that it looks like an XF DMPL cameo, which, of course, makes no sense for a few reasons. The pictures aren't good enough to say much of anything else, but I'd avoid this coin.

This one is PCGS AU Details. You need to tilt it just right to see the wipe/cleaning marks. Very attractive, though, and a tough variety. $450 shipped.

Thanks JB.
Yes, I did mean 2AC2. I don't know how to revise the title, or I would.
You can edit the first post of the thread (since it's yours) and change the title that way.

Re: 1887P VAM 10A- No Die Clash on Obv & Rev: EDS?

If it has all the breaks for VAM 10A and they're strong enough for VAM 10A, then it's VAM 10A. As mentioned, this is one of those gray area VAMs. The "displaced field" breaks listed on VAM 10A are dubious, and seem to be little more than die erosion that crosses a die crack. This is not the only VAM...

Re: Anyone know what this is?

Here's an article about the Carlos - Juana coinage. This one looks to be from 1543-46, probably a shipwreck coin.
