Re: Morgan 1921-D VAM-9 === LDS of VAM-1EV?

VAM 9 came first, so if I had a say, 1EV would be gone, and 1EV2 would become 9B (VAM 9A is unrelated), but it's Leroy's call. If I had a say I would accommodate both 1EV1 and 1EV2 in VAM 9 (I tend to be a lumper ). VAM-9 is so convoluted now, adding a "9B" when "9A" is not related would be very co...

Re: Morgan 1921-D VAM-9 === LDS of VAM-1EV?

Ok, but 1EV1 also lists obverse doubling. The die progression here is my 1EV1 (no letter breaks) -> my 1EV2 (letter breaks) -> VAM-9 (worn scribble area, as illustrated on the VAM-9 page). Does anyone have an example of VAM-9 that shows better scribbles than the VAM-9 page? Either way, another pote...

I do not have an example of 1921-D VAM-9, but the breaks on the letters S and D look suspiciously like those of VAM-1EV2.
I would put it the other way around. VAM 9 is listed for having specific doubling. VAM 1EV would seem to be a duplicate of VAM 9, and VAM 1EV2 a late die stage of it.

Re: Another USPS adventure...

I sent a shipment to my daughter in Pasadena, CA, on the 16th. By the 18th, it made it to Arcadia, CA, 5 or so miles away from her. It's still there. Other stuff I sent her at the same time arrived within 3 days.

Yes, VAM 84. Washed out L is a one-and-done on a long nock 78 for this die pair.

... If you've ever studied a Chapman proof, THAT was a different animal. Those dies were definitely worked more completely to get a Proof look. David has a Chapman as well, so I've drooled on it too... After it was in the holder, I hope. Anyway, I'll send this coin off for grading Monday and see wh...

Re: 1885 Double Top or RPD?

They punched the date into the master hubs, yes? No. Dates were punched into the working dies for all series until 1909. Starting in 1909, dates were punched into a master die, so any doubling on the date would be a doubled die, not a repunched date. If dates were punched directly into the working ...

Re: 1885 Double Top or RPD?

RPD means repunched date. If the date is formed with a punch, it can be repunched, such as is the case with the coin shown and all other Morgan's before 1921 (except maybe some 1878s). If the date is only in the hub, it cannot be a RPD, and any doubling is due to a doubled die. They punched the dat...

What’s the research that concluded
1AG and 47 both being Zerbie dies?

Is it still true 47 is officially a Zerbie Die?

Mitch
Those I've seen are all VAM 1AG.

Re: Tampered dies.

So anyone have insights as to what “varieties” might be out there for 1882-s $5 & $10 gold coins for grins and chuckles? There is an account of the alterations in a letter from Snowden, which is reproduced in From Mine to Mint in a section about unauthorized die modifications. It seems to be the IG...

Re: 14.11 PCGS 65 Heritage

There's a discussion on the BST about it. For Heritage pictures, I prefer their slab shots to others. Their glam shots are consistently way too contrasty and tend to make the coin look a grade lower than it is. I haven't viewed enough of their coin videos to learn them well yet. On a guess-the-grade...

Perhaps. I think you need to bust it out, get rid of the PVC-pox, and run it through a PCGS bulk order. ;)

I keep thinking there is some rule or standard of determining VAMs that I'm not aware of yet. Thank you all! I would say VAM 59. The crack guide wa...

I don’t know how I missed that one.
Search for "1885-O" gouge ear and it comes right up. The wiki search function is often useful, especially since Leroy's vocabulary is pretty consistent. Don't neglect it. I know it has saved me a bunch of time.
