Re: is this rust?

Yes, it looks like that. It's coming out of the coin, isn't it? How would that happen?

Re: is this rust?

How is it not imprinted into the coin, instead of coming out of the field?

is this rust?

Is this pitting from rust on this 1897 P dollar? These come out from the surface of coin. There is a big one right below the center tail feather. Others are in the N of ONE, above the E, and to the right of the O in DOLLAR. It doesn't look anything like the rust on the VAM-1A Pitted Reverse. If it i...

are "spikes" in 8's of any greater significance than just markers?

This 1889 P piece has one "spike" to the right of the first 8 and one on both sides of the the second 8. It also has a die clash by the neck. In trying to identify this piece, I didn't find any mention of the "spikes". Are these just symptoms of a later die state and of no consequence? They are inte...

Re: does the 1878-P VAM-42 7/7 Tail feathers have a damaged 4th star?

I didn't think the die clash mark by the neck would wear off. I thought there sould at least be a trace of it visible, especially right up against the neck. With all the dirt in the loop of the 8, I could not see the die chips. It looks like that 4th star tip is a bit shorter even on an uncirculated...

Re: does the 1878-P VAM-42 7/7 Tail feathers have a damaged 4th star?

I see the evenly sized/divided ear. Not sure what to look for on the bottom of the first 8. I'm not seeing the retooling of the olive branch. I see a detached leaf portion, and that's about it. I did notice that the top set of feathers is missing the middle section of feathers though. I haven't seen...

Re: does the 1878-P VAM-42 7/7 Tail feathers have a damaged 4th star?

What about the 4th star? The obverse photos on VAM 42 and 42-A both don't appear to show a broken 4th star. This piece has a broken star.

Is this a new variety?

is there a way to edit a discussion post you created without creating a "reply" ?

Is there a way to edit a discussion question you created? In particular, swapping out some of the pictures and improving some of the text? And can this be done without creating a "reply", which can give the impression that your question was already answered by someone?

does the 1878-P VAM-42 7/7 Tail feathers have a damaged 4th star?

It looks to me like the reverse of this piece is the B/Al seen on VAM-42. It has a portion of extra arrow head below middle one. It has the detached Eagles right wing and branch end. It also has the very wide 6th tail feather. The obverse has no die clash, so I am thinking it is the VAM-42. The desc...

major hub type table - add links with descriptive photos

It would be helpful if the Major Hub Type table in the Introduction section (which is very helpful and interesting!) had links assigned to each of the Hub Type IDs that you could click on that would take you to a photo of that hub with arrows and notes pointing out the various major points of differ...

add die information to Morgans By Date listings

It would be helpful to add the full descriptors to the Morgans By Date listings. It would help when trying to identify a piece. Once you click through the different VAMs and find one that matches either the obverse or reverse of your piece, with this added information you could easily look at only t...

1878-P VAM-42 7/7 Tail feathers VAM 42 = die clash obverse or no?

The photo of the 1878-P VAM-42 7/7 Tail feathers obverse shows a die clash to the left of the neck and to the right of the lower portion of the cap.

VAM 42A is cataloged as this piece with a die clash, and the photo shows it.

Do we have a photo of a VAM 42 piece without a die clash?

1878 7/8 VAM 36 obverse = II 1 or II 2 ?

The listing catalogs the 1878 7/8 VAM 36 as a:
36 II1 - B/Ag (4TF) (179) I-4 R-4

But below that where it goes into detail on the obverse die, it says:
Obverse II2- Star 4 right is intact. ...
