Re: Starting over from scratch

Bottom line, look for quality. Tough varieties in high grade or with great eye-appeal. Bang-for-the-buck issues that are PL or DMPL -- use pop reports and value guides to figure these out. Cherrypick for grade in the grade just below where the price jumps. Don't buy a coin you don't like. Word has ...

Re: Starting over from scratch

I would collect items that bring me pleasure and/or offer the opportunity to explore their background, circumstances of creation and influence on events. It's also desirable that your items present forums and engagements with others of similar or supportive interests. The most enjoyable part of the...

Re: Morgan Grading Question

The tics don't bother me as much as the weak strike. Two dimension I would lean MS64 with a shot at 65

Starting over from scratch

If you were starting over from scratch, with a working knowledge of coins, where would you focus? Most of my collecting dollars are slowly being moved from baseball cards and back into coins. I have picked probably a quarter of the known MS 1886p VAM 20 for example, so not exactly new to VAM's but m...

Starting an 1878 8tf collection

Online, I struggle with the the 8tf reverse's depending upon the quality of the image.

Obviously the focus and lure is the Vam 14 variations.

What would be a good cross section of obverse and reverse VAM's in XF to AU to help me along in this process.

Re: What exactly is a die study?

Hawkeye, I was looking at your 1881o page and it was packed full of helpful information and answered some of my basic questions. The die Matrix was an aha moment! I will undertake 1886p more than likely, since VAM 20 has been my obsession for the past few years. Knew I would regret selling those coi...

Re: What exactly is a die study?

Weth,

Thank you...

That link was a great help.

I am sure to have a lot of basic and boring questions along the way.

Going to read the Morgan and Peace Dollar textbook over the weekend and ponder which specific date and mintmark to undertake.

Re: What exactly is a die study?

This was very helpful. If I understand... Take a coin Study the obverse and reverse Determine the HUB and die pairing Using the "Attribution 101" obverse and reverse images Go point by point thru the areas of interest and notate and image any die markers, scratches, scribbles etc... Rinse and repeat...

What exactly is a die study?

If I am putting in the effort searching for a certain pet VAM, and see thousands of coins online and several at shows, and catalog my purchase mistakes... why not take it a step farther? There is a Die Study Roll call page... and my date is not under study. I understand the process and the terms, HU...
