Re: 1922 D VAM 2O2 VLDS

Great find !!! Congrats - Break has widened at rim above T considerably. Nice displaced field break below R. This particular VAM has a unique verticle die break at left side of Y to rim. I had one graded in 2018 that received AU 58 grade in ANACS holder VAM 2 'O' 2 . By the way, Larry Briggs, discov...

Re: 1902 O Morgan Rotated reverse

Another obvious counterfeit feature on the reverse is the denticle size variation. Denticles are stubby and
narrow from 9:15 to 2:30 position. Denticles are longer and thicker from 2:45 to 9:00 position.

Re: Exploring the theories of "Orange Peel"...

While they look similar, the stuff we see on Morgans and gold proofs are two different things. The weird crumbling on Morgans is in the die - it reproduces the same pattern on all examples at a similar point in the progression. It's different on the gold we're talking about. Here's 3 examples of th...

Re: 1923 D? VAM 1AL RPM

Sometimes mintmarks are damaged after the strike (PMD), altered in appearance by defective planchets, strike doubled, partially filled (Struck Through), etc. True over mintmarks must exhibit enough detail from the secondary mintmark to positively identify. The 1900 O/cc Morgan Dollar variety is a gr...

Re: Exploring the theories of "Orange Peel"...

Just read Chris Pilliod's article about "Orange Peel" on proof gold coins (1881 $5). The reference to grain size of gold metal becoming greatly enlarged due to overheating during annealing stage of planchets is very interesting! According to Chris Pilliod's analysis, the "orange peel" exhibited on t...

Re: Exploring the theories of "Orange Peel"...

The "Orange Peel" shown on the proof coins pictured is a planchet issue! The devices show no effect of
the dimpled surfaces that cover the field. IMHO

Re: Hypothetical question

Identical VAMS offered by a seller which are unattributed and uncirculated would seem to have come out of an original roll ! I have witnessed this before on clashed 1904 O Morgans VAM 35A. Identical VAMS in random circulated grades from one seller points toward dispersal of a private collection. Of ...

Re: Really Broken 1921 D Help Please

PUP for 1921 D VAM 1P3 is die chip between 5th and 6th right stars in addition to die breaks at 21 and 2-4 left stars. Reverse die breaks at ATE and AME. This variety was initially designated 1921 D VAM 1P2 by LVA on my submission dated August 19, 2016 as a New Discovery. A re-submission for review ...

1922 D VAM 1AH Typo

Heading on the Page should read 1922-D VAM 1AH Die Break Right of 1 . Incorrect heading reads I (eye). Mistake is repeated again in front of I-2 R-6. The description of obverse is correct with "displaced field at top right of 1". The number 1 (one) and the capital letter I (eye) are frequently misap...

PCGS Sight White Certified

Anyone else noticed this round blue emblem with a white "W" centered on it? The ebay seller claims that it signifies no distractions and a "white" coin. It kinda looks like an after-market sticker to me. Both Morgan and Peace Dollar PCGS holders are pictured by this seller ecoinshow displaying this ...

Re: 1921-d VAM-1K.

Grease, dirt, metal filings, etc. can accumulate inside the die recesses from normal die press operation. Grease is used as a lubricant for various moving parts in the press and can accidentally get deposited on the die face. Strike through errors are much more common on 1921 P,D, and S Morgan dolla...
