Re: 1904 O Silver Dollar

The gouges in the denticles are too strong for this to be a LDS where somehow the date doubling disappeared, or close to it. The gouges actually do get weak with die wear. It still looks to me like your coins date digits got smashed.

Re: 1904 O Silver Dollar

You have a VAM-3. The reverse of the VAM-3 was not married to any other obverse die, so I suspected you had a VAM-3. The gouges in the denticles nail it. Your date got mushed somehow by PMD so you can't see the date doubling.

Re: 1904 O Silver Dollar

How about a shot of the denticles between S of PLURIBUS and the 1st U of UNUM, plus the inside of the ear.

Re: 1888-S Morgan Dollar Die Study

I am pulling together some info on the 88-S die study, and found a boo-boo in the die incest and die progression chart. The OD8 in the lower right hand box should have been OD11. The corrected version is below.

Re: 1901 Silver Dollar

Yup, VAM-19. There is a polished LDS which is what your coin is. Thanks for the additional photos.

Re: 1901 Silver Dollar

Another way to do this is by date placement. Look at the photos below and see which one your coin matches.

Re: 1901 Silver Dollar

Quite frankly I am not convinced you have a VAM-19. The photo of the E of LIBERTY you show kinda looks right, but I am not sure. The use of the VAM-3 obverse is the 2nd use of that die, so the gouge/scratch at the E would be weaker. The VAM-19 reverse die is the 2nd use, so the one & done PUPS for i...

Re: 1901 Silver Dollar

I am not aware of additional info for specific VAMs above and beyond what you see on the individual VAM pages. Sometimes maybe in the toggles in the Contents Box at the top of the page, but I would assume it would be the exception.

By the way, I am responsible for the VAM-19 listing.

Re: 1901 Silver Dollar

VAM-19 shares the same obverse as VAM-3. The VAM-3 obverse PUP is shown below. The VAM-19 reverse has a few one & done PUPs. They are the gouge at N of ONE and pitting at the right side of the 2nd L in DOLLAR as shown below. If your coin has all three PUPs, then it is a VAM-19. Beware, the reverse d...

HA Shipping Delay

Don't know if anyone else is experiencing this. I won a coin on May 27th and still do not have it. I emailed over a week ago and got no answer. I called today and was told it would be a few more weeks while the "move" is on. So if you are expecting something from HA, be patient seems to be the sugge...

Re: 1888-S Morgan Dollar Die Study

Kurt, I don;t have the Scott Unofficial 1904-O Reference set in front of me, it is in another state right now. Bring this back up to me on July 2nd or 3rd and I can take a look. Thanks.

Re: 1888-S Morgan Dollar Die Study

You sent me a bunch of stuff from late 1887 to early 1888 to search for cancelled die correspondence. I did not find any, but I was not looking for this current info. I will go back and look for die requests or shipping to SF. Thanks.

1888-S Morgan Dollar Die Study

If you recall, in a post a while back I mentioned that the number of assigned VAMs and mintage of the 1888-S dollars seemed out of whack. With 16 base VAMs and a mintage of 657K, that would equal 41K coins per VAM. So I did a die study. The results are interesting, at least to me. I identified 12 ob...

The 2x2s look kinda anal. But the WOW coin has me guessing the squirrel. But that is just a guess.

Re: 1878 VAM 9 First Die Pair

I bought a holed 3 cent silver one time to fill out the collection. My brother was a custom jeweler for decades so I asked him to fill the hole to see` what would happen. He did a decent job, but it didn't get past the graders at ANACS as a problem free coin. I would leave it alone. I may actually s...
