I should have also mentioned that the VAM-1i is also special.
It may turn out to be one of your better finds.

Re: 1878-S V 63 page needs to be updated
JB,
Thanks for getting the VAM-63 information in good shape.
I hate to bring this up -- the incorrect labeled photos that were on the V-63 page are on the V-81 page.
They need to be removed because they are incorrectly labeled.

Re: 1878-S V 63 page needs to be updated
Suggested changes to VAMWorld V-63 page: 1. 63.1 right above the photo of 1878 date be changed to 63.2. Reason -- the 2 X 4 array of photos is of V63.2 not 63.1. 2. 63.2 and the photo below it should be removed. Reason -- The photo caption “1878-S VAMs 63.2 (not on my 81!)” is not correct information.

Re: 1878-S Top 30 Complete Set
I think purging the 78-S VAM-11 and VAM-12 leads me to believe that some think that Leroy’s description and photos in the 2nd and 3rd edition of the VAM books can be ignored. Granted there has not been any 78-S discovered so far that meet the description for VAM-11 and the photo for VAM-12. The desc...

Thanks Roger.
Yes it is a 1'0'
My 1'0' is not like the later die state shown with the dramatic die break from the Y to the rim -- mine is like the early die state shown in the photo right below the words Additional Photos:

Oh -- stupid me.
Brian knows more about unseen coins than I do about ones I am looking at.
Yes -- it is a 23-D.

Re: 1878S VAM-8....??
A while back back I looked in to using one of the USB microscopes that sell on eBay.
However I had to give up since I could not find any that were compatible with Windows 10.
What software do you use and what computer, laptop, or tablet do you use?

Help with 88-O & 23-S
I have an 88-O and a 23-S that I have tried to VAM ; so far no luck. 88-O has die crack from lower hair into 1st 8 of date, then goes out of bottom of one, then over to left below neck point, and continues all the way around the coin the over the top of letters and stars. 23-S has die crack on top o...

Re: 78-S wing gouge
I suggest the following wording be used for VAM-63. I used Leroy’s’ wording in his letter to Clay. Discovered by Marc Serafine, April 2001, Revised 2020 63 (revised) II 1 · B2an (S/S Right) (185) I-3 R-6 Obverse II 1 – Die 1 – Early Die State (EDS) with 2 short lines eye front Die 2 – Late Die State...

Re: 1878S VAM-45.....????
Sorry that I spilled the beans.
However I think after some one looks at a coin (78-S in particular) for a few days, and has not figured out what VAM it is, then being told the VAM is no harm, because that person has learned a lot about the method to identify VAMs.

Re: 78-S wing gouge
Below is a Clay’s letter from Leroy Van Allen.; Clay gave me permission to show his letter. In the 4th paragraph Leroy explains four 78-S dollars. The coins are: #1 VAM-81 #2 VAM 63 EDS #3 VAM 63 LDS # 4 VAM-71 I think Leroy’s explanation of the 4 coins says VAM-81 is same obv as VAM 63 EDS die 1 an...

Re: 78-S wing gouge
I read over the whole discussion again and realized that I didn't say whether this is a 63.1 or 63.2.
This looks to me like a 63.1 that has the obverse of V-81.
First photo shows very fine die line across the lower cotton leaf; attribute of 63.1

Re: 78-S wing gouge
Rather than saying the fine line left of the mintmark appears on the 63.1 reverse I should have said it appears on both the 63.1 and 63.2 reverse.
