VAM of the Week:
- Almost Impossible
This proof only variety is one of the rarest of all VAMs. The Reverse of 1879 proof has a reported mintage of 50 pieces, and there are reportedly 12 to 15 surviving examples.
I suspect the actual number is much lower. Anecdotally. I've had the chance to hold and examine multiple examples of the 1804 dollar, the 1913 Liberty Nickel, along with the
specimen strike of the 1794 dollar and the only privately held 1822 half eagle. I've even seen the 1849 double eagle through some serious security glass. I have never had
a chance to personally examine an 1878 Reverse of 79 proof. The closest I've come was discovering the 1879 and 1880 proof dollars use the same reverse die. There have
only been a pair of auction appearances (and one miscue) in recent history, the Heritage auction at the 1995 ANA in Anaheim, and the November 2004 session of the
Richmond Collection by DLRC where the coin sold for $155,250. This same example was held by Rare Coin Wholesalers and they were kind enough to share images when I
was researching an article on the 1879 proof pieces. It's one of those pieces where having the money to buy the coin doesn't guarantee you'll ever get the chance to acquire it.

Wikispaces thought is would be a good idea to show all the current discussions at the end of all the pages,
and not give us a functioning way of turning that feature off.
Likewise, don't post discussions to the bottom of any of the VAM pages, either.
Only post to the main message board and the buy/sell/trade board.
