1921-P VAM-26 Wide Reed Tripled Chin

Discovered by Jim Baxter, October 1978.

This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM

26 (revised) IV 20 -D1a (Infrequently Reeded, Tripled Chin/Nose, Scribbling Die Scratches) (157) I-3 R-4
Obverse IV20 - Slightly tripled chin and nose tip. All left stars and lower outside of 9 upper loop slightly doubled towards rim. All right stars very slightly quadrupled towards rim. Die Marker- IR variety 3 with two horizontal pairs of die polishing lines in hair curl junction above 2.
Reverse D1a - Fine die scratches in various directions on over polished tail feathers around eagle's right leg and some fine lines at bottom couple feathers between eagle's left wing and body. Die Marker- Heavy polishing line on upper tail feathers above middle arrow shafts.

Comments:
In 1921 there was a different collar used to strike some coins. This collar had less reeding causing the wide reeding variety to be created. The wide reed VAMs, or infrequently reeded VAMs are available if you look for them. Stack a group of 1921-P coins and examine their edge. Any wide reeds will stand out as having "thicker" reeds and can be quickly pulled out. High grade examples are harder to come by, not because they don't exist but because they can't be cherried from slabbed holders which hide the edge of the coin.

This VAM has subtle tripling of liberty's chin:

There is die polish between the eagle's legs. Also note that Leroy has added scribbling scratches tailfeathers to the description of this variety, although the scribbled area is mainly in the protected area to the left of the right leg:
