1896-O VAM-19 Shifted Date

Discovered by John Baumgart, May 2001.

This coin is a Hit List 40 Morgan VAM.

19(Formerly 1A) III213 · C3a (Shifted Date) (181) I-5 R-5
Obverse III213– Very large vertical shift in date punches with initial punch high. Bottom of initial 8 punch shows as a slightly curved bar at top of 8 lower loop opening. 9 has raised metal at top of lower loop opening. Lower left of initial 6 punch shows as a triangular vertical bar with curved right side at upper left of 6 lower loop opening. Some specimens show a short horizontal line to left of bottom of 1 upper serif. Polishing lines in hair and LIBERTY.

Here is the date position. Note the metal inside the base oval of the 8, in the top of the lower section of the 9 and in the lower oval of the 6.
