1889-P VAM-5A Far Date, Pitted Reverse, Gouge Olive Branch

Discovered by John Coxe, November 2006 - with VAM-5B.
(Previous discovery by Leonard Hinckley, February 1974 and revised by Herb Zepke, December 1998, were a different coin, delisted because it was a striking error.)

This coin is a Hit List 40 Morgan VAM.

The VAM-5A designation was intially bestowed upon the famous Top-100 barwing variety. However, it was later determined that the bar wing was, in fact, a reverse shared by two separate varieties, redesignated as VAM-19A and VAM-22. This variety is neither.

The date on the VAM-5A is a far date, designated as obverse III2-5. That is the same obverse given to VAM-22. However, III2-5 refers to an undifferentiated class of 1889-P far dates. (In fact, the VAM description for III2-5 even specifically includes both opened and closed 9 dates.) This date is closer to the normal position.

Price History:

A price history for this variety is difficult to assess as there are very many Top-100 barwings out there still designated as VAM-5A. Further, this newer variety is not well known to even seasoned VAM veterans. However, specialists are clearly waking up to this one. The VAMView price guide shows it being valued at roughly double the barwing through XF and five times the barwing in AU. Reported VAM-5A sales cannot be included here easily. I know of no such sales that can be verified as this variety and not just another barwing.
