1888-P VAM-16A Doubled 1 & Lower Rev., Die Gouge in Cotton Leaves

Discovered by Jeff Oxman, February 2000.

This coin is a Hot 50 Morgan VAM.

*All VAM16 and 16A are the same. 16A delisted 10/2016.

16A III2 13 · C3f (Doubled 1 & Lower Rev., Die Gouge in Cotton Leaves) (190) I-2 R-5
Obverse III2 13 – Vertical die gouge in leaves on either side of right cotton boll. Small horizontal die gouge in lower hair edge below designer’s initial M. (Formerly VAM 26)

Comments:
1- Update: In July 2006, Van Allen eliminated the VAM-26 and made it the VAM-16A. Van Allen says the former VAM-26 is "possibly the same as VAM 16 because of weak doubling below the serif of 1. So made VAM-26 new VAM-16A with gouges." I-2, R-5.
Obviously there are mixed opinions on this variety.

Additional photos:
Formerly 1888-P VAM-26, discovered by Jeff Oxman in February 2000, this variety is easily identified by its broad die gouge through the lower cotton boll on the obverse. The date is only slightly left of normal with doubling evident on the tops of all three eights. The VAM-16A, when found, is often in mint state.

From the original VAM-26 entry to vamworld.com: The C3f reverse exhibits doubling on the lower part. This reverse was shared with VAM-16 but VAM-26 is not a later state of VAM-16 as the obverse is clearly different. The obverse here has not been located without the gouge. For some reason, VAM-16 and VAM-26 were not admitted to the Hot-50 with the other DDR varieties.

Also note obverse "small die gouge in hair below designer's initial M," which Van Allen does not believe to be an MPD:
