Discovered by Bill Fivaz, May 1976. Revised 2004, 2011.

This coin is a Top 100 and a WOW! Morgan VAM.

1A(revised) III2 1 · C3c (Clashed Obverse O, Reverse BER, Die Break R) (181) I-4 R-5
Obverse III2 1– Large vertical die crack thru R in PLURIBUS that becomes breaks at R, chips at L and displaced field break along crack on very late die states. Clashed die with partial incuse O of III O mint mark from reverse showing above right wreath leaf.
Reverse C3c– Medium III O mint mark set high. Clashed die with almost full raised E from LIBERTY on obverse below eagles tail feathers on left side and partial raised B at left of E and tip of R to right of E.

Commnts:
1- 2013 - The 1A die progression has been separated into 1888-O VAM-1A1, 1888-O VAM-1A2, and 1888-O VAM-1A3.
2- 1888-O VAM-1A Clashed E. The New Orleans mint had some issues in 1888 but their errors created some great VAMs. Two of arguably best Morgan varieties emerged from that branch mint on that year: VAM-1B Scarface and the VAM-4 Hotlips. The VAM-1B Scarface die break is probably the result of a die clash, just like this coin. The dies clashed on this VAM-1A and transferred the remains of an "E" from Liberty's headband underneath the Eagle's tail feathers.

In addition to the clashed E, a die break occurred on the obverse and grows over time creating a great variety. Had the spectacular Scarface not happened, this could have been considered one of the best Morgan breaks.

The area from the wing to the Motto has a line that is much stronger in hand than shown in this photo.
