1886-P VAM-21 Gouge in M, Doubled Reverse (Former VAM-1B)

Discovered by Bill Van Note, November 1998.

This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM

21 III2 20 - C3c (8 Below Designer's Initial, Doubled Reverse) (189) I-3 R-3
Obverse III2 20- Bottom of 8 showing as raised curve bar below designers's initial M at base of neck. Top curve of bar has smaller radius than bottom matching the bottom inside of the 8.
Reverse C3c - Doubled TED STATES OF AMERICA AR, IN GOD WE TRUST, right star and right upper wreath leaves doubled toward rim.

Comments: 1886 VAM-21 Gouge in "M". George T. Morgan placed an M at Liberty's neck, signing the design with his initial. On this variety, the M received a gouge and the coins struck with this die have a raised line through the M. Previously this variety was known as VAM-1B. It was changed when the gouge was determined to be a misplaced digit (the bottom of an "8") and therefore from its own distinct die rather than being a later stage of VAM-1.

This close-up shows clearly why this is thought to be an MPD variety. See the two curves, curved at different pitches:

Many do not notice the fantastic doubling on the reverse of this VAM. Check out the tripling (quadrupling???) on the ST in TRUST:
