1886-P VAM-1C 3 + 2 Clashed Reverse

Discovered by Bill Fivaz, March 2001.

This coin is a Hot 50 and a WOW! Morgan VAM.

1C(revised) III21 · C3a (3 + 2 Clashed Reverse) ( ? ) I-4 R-4
Obverse III21– Date set left within normal position. Only faint die clash marks show at lips and eye front.
Reverse C3a– Unusual offset of sideways vee clash marks next to top of right wreath. Top set of sideways vees shows three closely grouped clash marks. Lower group shows three clash marks with fairly wide separation on early die state while later die states only show two outer clash vee marks. These die clash marks appear on very early PL die state coins, so possibly die clashes occurred during die setup in press.

Comments:
1- Date set at left within normal position.
2- Unusual offset of reverse sideways vee clash marks next to top of right wreath. Top set of sideways vee shows three closely grouped clash marks while lower group shows two with a fairly wide separation. These clash marks appear on very early PL die state coins, so possibly die clashes occurred during the die setup in the press.
3- Later die states, with 2 clashes in the lower cluster, also have a chip in the G in God, which is not present on coins with 3 clashes in the lower cluster.
4- Comes 3+2 and 3+3 see LVA Plates below

Many LDS specimens in higher grades show some of the additional clash mark. However, it only qualifies as EDS if the lower edge of that clash is bold.

This is from the EDS discovery coin:
Not that the lower edge of the clash is very visible. It does not require a lot of looking to find it.

This one is LDS, despite a remnant of the extra clash mark:

Clashed eye sockets from the obverse may be found just above the left side of the olive leaves This clashing is visible to the naked eye and may be used as an easy VAM identifier.

Just to go along with Sentry02's pic above, here's the same clashes on the obverse. The double clash can be seen coming diagnonally down from Liberty's eye towards the bottom.
