1883-P VAM-10 Sextupled Stars

Discovered by Martin Field, December 1978.

This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.

10 III2 10 ∙ C3a (Doubled Date, Dash 8, Sextupled Stars) (180) I-3 R-4
Obverse III2 10 – Entire date is doubled. 1 doubled strongly below upper and lower crossbars. First 8 doubled strongly below lower loop. Second 8 doubled below lower loop as a thin line in middle. 3 doubled slightly at bottom left inside of lower loop. Second 8 has a long curved dash set well below the lower loop. All left and right stars and top of UNUM letters quadrupled to sextupled towards rim with first five stars on right having large shifts.
Reverse C3a – Normal die. Reverse has X die scratch above arrow feathers. Photo below.

Comments:
1- This is one of the most difficult Top 100 VAM features to see. The stars on the right of the date have multiple doublings, up to six. Count the tiny shelves and you will see the many levels. This is a tough coin to find and part of its rarity is the difficulty identifying the specimens. Because of the subtle features, I've also included a photo of a diagnostic die crack through the date that may help when you are out cherry picking!
