1880-O VAM-49 Ear/Hangnail Overdate

Discovered by Randy Campbell, April 1999. Former VAM-6B. VAM-6B discovered by Ted Clark, November 1968.

This coin is a Top 100 and a WOW! Morgan VAM.

49 (formerly 6B)III25 · C3l (8/7 Spike, Hangnail Eagle, Doubled UNITED, Clashed Obverse n & st) (176) I-4 R-6
Obverse III25– Same die as VAM 6A but later die state with same clashed die partial incuse n of In from reverse next to Liberty head neck and partial incuse st of Trust from reverse showing in right hair vee of lower hair edge.
Reverse C3l– UNITED letters doubled towards rim and top of coin, left star strongly doubled towards rim, left wreath leaves slightly doubled on left edge. Die gouge through the eagle’s left tail feather and lower arrow feather. I O mint mark.

1- The "8/7 Ear" variety with "Hangnail" reverse. This is an amazingly tough VAM to locate and is considered the key overdate in the series. It has small "ear" mark on the top left of the 8 from an underlying 7. This mark is similar, but not the same as, VAM-6 and VAM-6A.
2- The Reverse is the same die as VAM-48 with the tailfeather gouge. Recently reclassified as VAM-49, this is the former VAM-6B.
3- In the winter 2006 “Top 100 Insights” population analysis, Michael S. Fey, Ph.D., reported 5 mint state coins and 59 circulated coins and advised collectors to “Ultra Rare in XF or better,” a sentiment I strongly support.
4- comes with gouge at bottom of R of AMERICA and without gouge
