Obverse III2 32 –
Slightly doubled Liberty head profile including nose, lips, chin and upper neck. Obverse die of VAM-34A.
Reverse C3u –
Severely over polished lower reverse with parts of wreath bow missing and some disconnected leaves in lower wreaths. Engraving on leaves opposite ON, U &NI in left wreath and R, CA, ER in right wreath. Some light acid treatment at NI, ER and middle of eagle's left wing. Die later polished again causing shallower lettering, tail feathers and some leaves and berries disconnected in wreaths.

There were "thickness" issues reported by the Director of the San Francisco Mint in early 1879. To solve this, the Mint apparently planed down the reverse of several dies. Therefore this may be one of the first reverse dies used in the production of 1879-S coins, along with
