1878-S VAM-27 Long Nock, Broken N and D

Discovered by Jeff Oxman, April 1995.

This coin is a Top 100 and a WOW! Morgan VAM and Top 30 1878 S Variety

27(revised) II 1 · B1b (Long Center Arrow Shaft) (185) I-5 R-7
Obverse II 1– Three faint spikes below eyelid front, short vertical line in eyelid top corner and short vertical line at top of eye socket above eyelid.
Reverse B1b– Small III S mint mark centered and upright. Die marker of medium-sized die chip above top arrow feather. No diagonal polishing lines on tail feathers next to eagle’s right leg. Denticle above second S in STATES broken.

Comments:
1- The 1878-S Long Nocks include VAM-26, VAM-27, VAM-56, VAM-57, VAM-58, VAM-59, VAM-60, VAM-62, and VAM-72.

The D in Dollar is broken which is useful to attribute even low grade specimines. Note the mintmark is centered horizontally and vertically (set normal).

The N has a unique missing chunk which is also a good diagnostic.

There are unique eye clashes and mint mark positions for each VAM. VAM-27 is notable for the lack of any clashing coming out of the eyeball on most examples.
On a very high grade example, some clashing can be seen, but it will be absent on all but the most perfect specimen.

Undocumented, but a good [[#|confirmation]] feature for higher grade specimens, is the defect in the upper left (viewer's right) wing.
