3 I²2 – A¹c (Doubled Reverse) (189) I-2 R-4

Reverse A¹C - Letters in UNITED doubled strongly on top and bottom. STATES OF AMERICA letters doubled at bottom. ONE DOLLAR letters doubled at top. Left wreath strongly doubled. Three small feathers added on eagle's right and two on eagle's left side between leg and bottom of wing.

Comments:
1- The VAM-3 is a common to scarce variety. The 1878-P VAM-3 is an 8 tailfeather coin with the A1c reverse. This reverse is characterized by unique tail feathers next to the eagle's wings. UNITED STATES OF is also strongly doubled. A good marker for the A1c reverse is a blob of metal at the bottom of the F.
2- The A1c reverse is shared by Vams 3, 4, 5, 14-6, 14-7, 14-11, 14-12, 14-14, 14-17, and 14-18. All but VAMs 3 & 4 are major rarities. Check out the A1c attribution guide to differentiate the various VAMs. The VAM-3 does not have the dramatic doubled date shown by VAM-4. The '7' is only slightly doubled on the right side.
3- The 1878-P VAM-3 is an 8 tailfeather coin. An 8 tailfeather attribution guide is available on VAMworld.

The area in front of the eye is a good area to check to attribute VAM-3. Notice how flat the area to the left of the eye really is. There are also fine vertical die polishing lines to the left of the flat area. Check out the doubled eyelid. Extra metal under the eyelid and many parallel polishing lines in front of the eye.

Left stars die cracks:
