1878-P VAM-202 Lines in Wheat Leaves, Doubled Date & Reverse Legend

Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965.

202(revised) III11 · C1a (Lines in Wheat Leaves, Doubled Date & Reverse Legend) (180) I-3 R-5
Obverse III11– Lines in all wheat leaves, with more detail in cotton boll tops than type II obverse. Thin vertical bars of LIBERTY letters. Complete ribbon line at bottom of Phrygian cap. Date slightly doubled at top inside of upper and lower loops of 8's and left sides of 1 and 7 shafts. All left and right stars doubled towards coin center. Lower hair doubled.
Reverse C1a– Die chip on D in UNITED. Die marker– Tiny polish line at top left of arrow shaft and olive branch junction. Die Marker - Two diverging polishing lines in space left of eagle's left leg.

Comments: In authenticating the VAM 202, the first question is it a C1 reverse. If so, the coin is identified by elimination. With a full nostril, the VAM 201 is eliminated. Secondly, are there lines in the wheat leaves? Yes. VAMs 200 and 201 are eliminated. Finally is the wheat leaf above the word LIBERTY normal and full. If so, the VAM 203 is eliminated. Now, the only thing left is the VAM 202.
