1878-P VAM-14.4 Concave Reverse

Discovered by Jim Selfridge, May 1976.

This coin is a Hot 50 Morgan VAM

14-4 I2 2 - A1i (Concave Field) (180) I-3 R-4
Obverse I2 2- Doubled bottoms of E PLURIBUS and both sides of U in UNUM. Left side of all left stars slightly doubled. First 8 doubled slightly at top of inside of lower loop. 7 doubled on left side and tripled on right side of vertical shaft.
Reverse A1i - Slight doubling of UNITED, TTES, and MERICA on bottom of letters toward rim and of ONE DOLLAR on tops of letters toward coin rim. Right star is doubled on right side. Slight doubling on outside of wreath. Three small feathers added on eagle's right and two on eagle's left side between leg and bottom of wing. Field has more curvature than any other Morgan dollar and is especially concave near rim.

Comments:
1- The obverse is shared with 1878-P VAM-2 , which is a earlier die state.
2- The VAM 14.4 is an eight tailfeather Morgan that is the favorite variety of many VAM experts. Its beautiful concave reverse is unique in the series. Tilting and rotating a VAM 14.4 reverse in the light gives the impression you are gazing into a silver bowl. The effect rivals the best cartwheels you have ever seen on an obverse of any Morgan. If the VAMworld crew were to vote on the most distinctive VAM, the 14.4 would be in the top two or three. It's that dazzling. The 14.4 is referred to as the "Deep Dish" variety due to its concave reverse. It has a unique reverse that almost always has DMPL surfaces. It may have been previously mis-attributed as the VAM 13, which may not exist.

It's difficult to show the alluring effect of the concave reverse in a still photo. You must have a VAM-14.4 in person and see it rotated under the light. Notice how the light/shading on this photo of a VAM-14.4 reverse shows a circular pattern. Tilt the coin and this circle bends and moves as if it were a silver dish. This VAM is definitely one of a kind.
