1878-P VAM-10 Notched 7

Discovered by Leonard Hinckley, February 1974.

10 I28 A1e ( Doubled Motto) (180) I-3 R-4
Obverse I28 - First six stars on left doubled on left and right sides. E PLURIB doubled on left side and at bottom. Doubled date with 1 doubled at top left, above bottom crossbar and on right side of vertical shaft. First 8 doubled at bottom left inside of lower loop and right outside of both loops. 7 doubled on right side of vertical shaft and top left serif. Second 8 doubled slightly at bottom inside and upper left outside of lower loop.
Reverse A1e - Doubled left inside including legend, wreath, and wing tip. Two small feathers added on eagle's right and left side between leg and bottom of wing. Slightly concave reverse.

Comments: The 1878 VAM-10 is an 8 tailfeather coin with the A1e reverse. This reverse is characterized by unique tailfeathers next to the eagle's wings including a spiked feather on the right side that is often used as a diagnostic when paired with the two curved feathers on the left side(see photo below). VAM-15 also has the A1e reverse. The VAM-10 is frequently found with a PL or DMPL obverse.

Examine the reverse below. VAM-10 and VAM-15 both share this reverse, but the VAM-15 is a Top 100 coin and commands a hefty premium. The VAM-10 itself is a relatively scarce coin and is still a good find, but it does not carry the premium of the VAM-15. Thus, it is important to look at the obverse as well.

Here is the "notched 7" on the VAM-10. Look at the top and bottom of the left side of the crossbar of the 7:

And here is LIBERTY for the VAM-10. The VAM-10 does not have the major doubling in LIBERTY that the VAM-15 has:
