1878-CC VAM-6 Doubled Leaves

Discovered by Marilyn Tiernan, June 1970. Obverse discovered by Francis Klaes, June 1963.

This coin is a Top 100 and a WOW! Morgan VAM.

6 II4 - B1b (Doubled Obverse) (178) I-3 R-4
Obverse II4 - Doubled ear and cotton blossom leaves on the right edges, date, all stars on right and left on bottom edge.

Comments:
1- The 1878-CC VAM-6 has strongly doubled cotton leaves.
2- This obverse is shared by both the VAM-6, 1878-CC VAM-18,. In addition to the doubled cotton leaves, the ear, stars and date all show some doubling. The leaves are by far the strongest indicator on the obverse.
3- Note that 1878-CC VAM-24 also has doubled leaves but is a different obverse die. 1878-CC VAM-13 has a B2a short center arrow reverse, while VAMs 6 and 18 have the long center arrow B1 type reverse.

The key to differentiating VAM-6 from VAM-18 is the mint mark placement. VAM-6 has a mint mark set high and right. VAM-18 appears to be slightly harder to locate than VAM-6, but both are highly desirable. Note the arrow below indicating the point the mint mark and the wreath almost meet.

Interesting features appear above some of the letters on this coin, probably due to die deterioration.
